Last week the first Columbus location – and the first Ohio location, at that – of Los-Angeles-based Sweetgreen opened last week in the Short North. The chain started in 2007 and now features more than 230 locations nationwide. It’s known for its menu of seasonal salads, protein plates, warm bowls, and sides.
Sweetgreen transformed the corner space at 700 N. High St., on the southeast corner of High Street and East Lincoln Street. We remember when this used to be R.J. Snapper’s, but over the years it’s been Level and Monarch lounges. The structure was completely gutted and opened up with floor to ceiling windows.
Sweetgreen’s menu is plant-forwarded, although not exclusively plant-based – you’ll find salmon, chicken, and steak on offer. You can customize your own bowl, plate, or salad, or choose from 17-18 pre-set dishes. There’s also a kid’s menu.
We tried two of their fixed meals, and enjoyed both of them!
First up was the chicken pesto parm bowl, with roasted chicken, spicy broccoli, tomatoes, shaved parmesan, za’atar breadcrumbs, herbed quinoa, baby spinach, Sweetgreen’s hot sauce, and pesto vinaigrette.
And this is the miso glazed salmon plate: the salmon is layered with avocado, cucumbers, pickled onions, crispy onions, white rice, nori sesame seasoning, and a spicy cashew sauce.
With both dishes, we enjoyed the mix of textures and flavors. The ingredients were all fresh, and the portions were filling.
The prep kitchen is surrounded by glass, too, so you can watch the culinary team at work.
While the space is size-able, seating did fill up quickly (although it was opening week), but there seemed to be a steady carryout business, too.
Still, we really enjoyed our meals, and we can see ourselves returning for many more visits!
