Cameron Mitchell’s 100th Restaurant Cento Explores Classic and Modern Italian

by admin

Cameron Mitchell’s newest restaurant (for now, that is) marks his 100th foray into the restaurant world. Appropriately named Cento (Italian for “100”), this outpost inhabits the former G. Michael’s space in German Village. It opened in the summer of 2023, and we finally had a chance to visit for dinner with friends.

As the name suggests, Cento explores both modern and classic Italian food. The space retains its shape but has been given a makeover. You can sit in the bar area, the main dining room, or on the expanded patio.

True to the Cameron Mitchell style, service is very friendly and attentive. We started with the bread service, a pairing of a tomato-topped bread and garlic bread.

We dove in with a pair of drinks, too: their house Manhattan and a light and refreshing whiskey sour special.

Our server helpfully walked us through the menu, which is grouped as courses: antipasto, vegetables, pasta, and mains. We started with a trio from the antipasto menu: whipped ricotta, burrata, and octopus.

All three were nicely done. The burrata was prepared table-side, and the octopus was sous vide, so it was especially tender. We split a Caesar salad, too!

For our second round of drinks, we tasted a delightful Tatone Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and a paloma.

The photos don’t do them justice, but we enjoyed the pasta and main courses, too. We tasted a couple meatballs, a pesto with fusilli, a special similar to ravioli that was stuffed with goat cheese, and a rich carbonara.

My photos also don’t do any favors to the main courses, but they were excellently done, too: the branzino and the chicken saltimbocca.

We loved the hot pads, too. They reminded us of ones from our homes growing up. Our server said they’re imported from Italy!

And it’s hard to beat a great affogato. I appreciated that they made it with decaf coffee, since we were wrapping up around 9:30 at night!

Afterwards we wandered the dining room, spying out the large wheel of cheese used for bread service.

Cento is open:
